An important function of our organization is to help monitor the
ecological condition of the New Meadows Lake. For our members,
the health of the lake is most vividly indicated by the variety and
quantity of living things it supports. Dr. Furbish and her
associates published a list of flora for the New Meadows in the period
between 1890 and 1905, and there are no later published records.
Therefore, the Association is documenting the observations of its
members, encouraging others to take notes of their observations and
maintaining files for data collected by these observers as well as by
various governmental agencies.
The information by George Washington University is very unusual,
in that they have collected both plant (flora) and animal ( fauna) data
every two years since the mid-1980'ies, with the work supervised
by two professors of biology.
In general, we consider 2002 and this year to be one of the best for
the lake, based on bird sighting and nesting with the Bald Eagle
nest as the outstanding example.
To provide more specific data we are providing nine specific listings.
As time goes on, some of these will be revised, validated and
added to.
