During
the warmer
months in Maine I paint the views that I see from our boat while at
anchor. It's
a fun and interesting challenge to paint on a boat. All the changes in
wind direction, wave action
and big ship's wakes can toss everyone and everything around. It forces
me to let go and move with the rocking when I'd rather sit still.
I observe the changing
patterns in the sea and sky. I am often surprised by just how
absolutely wild and exuberant the clouds are. The land and sea
shift their moods dramatically in complex patterns of light, tide and
season. The renderings
that I do "plein
mare"
are an organic departure from my more experimental and
introverted studio work. I think that participating in nature plays an
important role in deepening my experience
of the physical world that we live in. The "inner"
and "outer" landscapes are in dialogue and support each other in
invisible ways. Nature's fleeting moment gives a glimpse of the
soul's eternal world.
