Striper fishing at Ticonic Falls, Waterville. June 2, 2000.
Prior to this year, very few anglers bothered to scale the steep banks
of the Kennebec to fish Ticonic Falls in Waterville. This year, the removal
of the Edwards Dam and the appearance of striped bass, alewives, blueback
herring and American shad at the turbulent falls has changed that. Few days
in June have not seen an angler perched at each point of ledge at Ticonic
Falls, despite the lack of any convenient access. 30 years ago, these falls
churned with the foul smell of raw sewage, now they churn with thousands
of native, sea-run fish.
