The Kennebec's Newest Wild Atlantic Salmon Stream ...
Messalonskee Stream, Waterville, 3/4 miles above Kennebec River, Fall, 1998.
Entering the Kennebec at Petty's Rips in Waterville, Messalonskee Stream
is heavily dammed for most of its length but still has about one mile of
free-flowing river accessible to the Kennebec River's migratory fish species.
A substantial portion of this one mile reach offers spawning and nursery
habitat for Atlantic salmon and blueback herring -- and several spring brooks
to keep things cool. The lower third of the stream is deeper and slower,
offering excellent American shad spawning habitat. Beaver, ducks, ruffed
grouse and great blue heron are common sights along the stream. A scenic
nature trail, built and maintained by students at Waterville Junior High
School, offers access to Messalonskee. Trail heads are located at Thomas
College and Waterville Junior High School along Route 104 in Waterville.
